Fresh Eggs!

I took my wife out for a drive in the Yambaru (North Okinawa) and we drove by many farms. We drove by a chicken farm and came upon a farmer's egg vending machine in Genka Village. You may see some stands on the side of the road, like in the old days, where farmers leave their crop for people to buy. They used the honor system back then and all you had to do was leave your money in the cash box. Now, so many people can't be trusted anymore (that's another story), so many farmer's have upgraded to use vending machines. I think these machines are cool and they also keep the farmer's from being ripped off! I bought a bunch of fresh brown eggs for ¥300. Stop by one of these stands and unload a few ¥100 coins. Can't beat the tasty treat!

It's winter! That means its "nabe - time" in Japan!

What is Nabe? Nabe means soup. During winter in Japan, many people eat nabe as a means of nourishment but also to keep warm. Usually, the family would sit around a "kotatsu" - a table with a heater underneath to keep your legs warm. There are many kinds of nabe. I think that most popular kind are seafood, kimchi, and this year many people are talking about making curry nabe. Here is a picture of our first nabe of the season. It is pork and chicken with vegetables, tofu and udon noodles. Ummmmm! Want to come over for a bowl?

New Year Food - Osechi

During the New Year, Japanese eat Osechi. Osechi is traditional food eaten only at the beginning of the New Year. Some foods that are offered are sweet black beans which represent a wealthy year to come. Another food is sweet mochi (rice cake) that represents to heart of Japan. All is delicious and of course we drink sake to help digest the Osechi! Here is a picture of our Osechi. It was delicious!
